Group Activity: Exothermic and Endothermic Reactions
Group Activity: Exothermic and Endothermic Reactions
Q) Group Activity Perform the following activity.
Take four beakers and label them as A. B. C and D.
Put 25 mL of water in A, B and C beakers and copper sulphate solution in beaker D.
above. Measure and record the temperature of each liquid contained in the beakers
Add two spatulas of potassium sulphate, ammonium nitrate, anhydrous copper sulphate and fine iron fillings to beakers A, B, C and D respectively and stir.
Finally measure and record the temperature of each of the mixture above.
Find out which reactions are exothermic and which ones are endothermic in nature.
Group Activity: Exothermic and Endothermic Reactions
Aim
To identify exothermic and endothermic processes by measuring temperature changes.
Materials Required
Four beakers, water, copper sulphate solution, potassium sulphate, ammonium nitrate, anhydrous copper sulphate, iron filings, thermometer, spatula and stirring rod.
Procedure
- Take four beakers and label them A, B, C and D.
- Add 25 mL of water to beakers A, B and C. Add copper sulphate solution to beaker D.
- Measure and record the initial temperature of each liquid.
- Add two spatulas of potassium sulphate, ammonium nitrate, anhydrous copper sulphate and fine iron filings to beakers A, B, C and D respectively.
- Stir the mixtures carefully and measure their final temperatures.
- Compare the initial and final temperatures to identify the heat changes.
Observation Table
| Beaker | Substance Added | Temperature Change | Nature |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Potassium sulphate | Record experimentally | Usually endothermic on dissolution |
| B | Ammonium nitrate | Decreases | Endothermic |
| C | Anhydrous copper sulphate | Increases | Exothermic |
| D | Iron filings + copper sulphate solution | Record experimentally | Displacement reaction; heat change may be small |
Conclusion
Endothermic process: Absorbs heat from the surroundings, generally causing the temperature to decrease.
Exothermic process: Releases heat to the surroundings, generally causing the temperature to increase.
Ammonium nitrate dissolving in water is endothermic, while anhydrous copper sulphate becoming hydrated in water is exothermic. Record the actual temperature changes for the other mixtures before classifying them.
Precautions
- Wear safety goggles and gloves.
- Do not touch or taste chemicals.
- Use clean equipment and measure temperatures carefully.
- Perform the activity under teacher supervision.
Note: Enter your measured temperatures in the observation table. Do not assume a temperature change without performing the experiment.
